What is Structural Integration?

Structural Integration, sometimes known as Rolfing®, is a form of bodywork developed by Dr. Ida Rolf in the 1940s. At its heart, this work is about helping the body find more freedom, balance, and ease. By working with the fascia—the connective tissue that wraps through and around every muscle and organ—Structural Integration supports better health, improved performance, and relief from pain or strain.

A Little History

Dr. Ida Rolf originally created a 10-session program designed to bring the body into alignment and restore fluid movement. Over time, her work inspired students and practitioners around the world.

One of them, Tom Myers, studied at the Rolf Institute in the 1970s. While teaching anatomy, he began mapping the body’s interconnected fascial “meridians,” which he later called the Anatomy Trains. These myofascial lines explain how tension and stress can travel through the body like currents—affecting posture, movement, and even comfort.

Tom Myers went on to develop Anatomy Trains Structural Integration (ATSI), expanding Dr. Rolf’s original series into a 12-session journey. Each session has its own focus, gradually reorganizing the body’s structure for greater ease, balance, and resilience.

What is the ATSI 12-Series?

Think of it as a guided journey back to your best self.

Life leaves its stories in our bodies—through injuries, habits, overuse, or the simple wear of daily living. Some places carry heaviness while others are rarely used. Over time, movement can become limited, cautious, or inefficient.

The 12-series is a systematic way to unravel what’s stuck, restore what’s missing, and reconnect you to your body’s natural flow. It’s practical and anatomical, but also deeply human.

As Marion Woodman once wrote:

“The soul loves to move, to express, to be free… Listen to the soul. Love it. Give it back its dance.”

Structural Integration helps create the physical conditions for that freedom.

What Can I Expect in a Session?

I won’t promise unicorns—but I will promise that you’ll be seen.

Each session begins with a body reading, where we observe posture, alignment, and movement patterns. This isn’t about judgment, but about honoring how your life story has shaped your body. Together, we set intentions: What wants to feel better? What would it be like to live with more fluidity, less pain, and greater connection?

From there, hands-on work with the fascia helps open, reorganize, and rebalance the body.

Should I Do the 3-Series or the 12-Series?

We always begin with the first three sessions of the 12-series:

  • Session One: The Superficial Front Line – Opens the breath and uplifts the system.

  • Session Two: The Superficial Back Line – Helps you ground and stand tall on your own two feet.

  • Session Three: The Lateral Lines – Opens your sides so you can spread your wings and find balance.

After three sessions, some people feel complete with the changes they’ve made. Others choose to continue into the full 12-series for deeper transformation. Both are valuable—it depends on your goals and resources.

What Should I Wear?

Structural Integration is best received in minimal, comfortable clothing that allows access to the body:

  • Women: underwear, shorts, a sports bra or basic bra, or a two-piece swimsuit.

  • Men: briefs, boxers, or shorts.

  • Alternative: fitted athletic wear such as running shorts or a tank top (spandex is okay but not ideal).

Choose what makes you comfortable—nothing more is required. On the day of your appointment, avoid lotions or oils, as they make the hands-on work less effective.

Whether you come for three sessions or twelve, Structural Integration is an invitation: to move with more ease, to feel more at home in your body, and to rediscover the freedom that is already within you.
